Hadaway Origami House

The Hadaway House—often referred to as the Origami House is one of Patkau Architects’ most technically demanding alpine residences, positioned on a steep, highly constrained lot within Whistler’s Sunridge Plateau. The home’s sharply folded, crystalline geometry responds to extreme snow loads, a narrow buildable footprint, and the architect’s deliberate avoidance of curved forms, resulting in a faceted timber-and-steel structure anchored into the mountainside.

Inside, the residence showcases tight-tolerance construction and high-precision detailing, including black American walnut millwork, Corian-faced assemblies, and razor-sharp reveal lines executed to exacting standards. Carefully choreographed window placements frame unmatched alpine viewpoints, summer breezes moving through controlled ventilation paths, winter storms captured as dynamic compositions, and long mountain vistas revealed through deliberate glazing geometry.

Materially, the home blends concrete massing on the lower level with a hybrid steel-and-timber frame above, all wrapped in an Ipê hardwood screen that weathers to a silver-grey patina. The result is a residence where architectural ambition, structural ingenuity, and craftsmanship converge at the highest level.
